Ohio's Compassionate Bus Driver: Nerissa Marcum's Inspiring Journey
Behind the wheel of a school bus, the day starts early and comes with a unique set of responsibilities. For Nerissa Marcum, a dedicated school bus driver with Hamilton City Schools in Southwest Ohio, her role is much more than just transporting students. Part of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees, Marcum's day begins at 6:30 a.m. and involves three shifts of driving 70 kids, requiring "patience and training and a lot of heart," as she describes.
Valerie Gainey, a bus aide who works with Marcum, praises her colleague's ability to connect with everyone. "She’s a wonderful person who gets along with everybody. She’s always pushing other people to be the best we can be," Gainey states. This connection is particularly evident in Marcum's rapport with the children, many of whom have special needs. "She loves those babies," Gainey adds. "They hug her and me. It’s just wonderful."
Marcum fondly remembers a student with severe anger issues. Her daily greetings and positive interactions helped him open up. "I love being that person for the kids. I love making their lives easier, being a shoulder they can lean on. It makes my job really rewarding," she shares.
Beyond her interactions with students, Marcum is an invaluable support to her colleagues. She consistently assists Gainey with tasks such as securing heavy wheelchairs. "She gets right in there with me," Gainey says, appreciating Marcum's willingness to help.
Marcum's commitment extends to training her peers as certified Ohio bus instructors, focusing on safety and student management. Additionally, she serves as the local union president, advocating for her colleagues and ensuring their needs are addressed by the school board. According to Gainey, "Nerissa makes [our employer] do right by us."
Marcum finds fulfillment in her advocacy work. "I like to feel like I’m protecting people and doing what’s right," she comments, emphasizing her desire for her peers to feel supported.
Despite the demands of her role, Marcum embraces the challenges that come with being a school bus driver. "Being a bus driver is a vital part of the school system and a lot of times we get overlooked," she notes. "Sometimes it’s very stressful and I get tired. But it makes me feel good that I’m making a difference."
