OAPSE Members Support Akron Students with Meal Distribution Efforts

Community Support for Akron's Students Amidst Federal Policy Shifts

In a significant show of community solidarity, members of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE), AFSCME Local 4, have taken proactive steps to assist Akron's students and families. Akron, recognized as one of Ohio's most economically challenged school districts, was at the center of this recent outreach.

On May 28, the nonprofit arm of OAPSE, known as OAPSE Making a Difference (OMAD), organized the distribution of meal and snack bags to students attending Akron Public Schools. This initiative aligns with OAPSE's overarching commitment to support the communities they engage with daily.

OAPSE President Lois Carson expressed her pride in the union's efforts, stating, “Being able to help the children we serve where the need is so high makes me so proud of my union and the entire OAPSE family.” She emphasized, "Members of OAPSE will continue to help the community every chance we can.”

The creation of OMAD by OAPSE members stems from a desire to address essential needs among students and working families throughout Ohio. The recent meal distribution in Akron stands as a testament to the union's dedication to helping those in immediate need.

This initiative is particularly pertinent given the current national climate. A new budget bill passed by the House of Representatives threatens to exacerbate hunger issues, with significant reductions in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) likely to impact many students adversely. Such policy changes are aimed at providing tax cuts to billionaires, as highlighted in a report on increasing hunger in America.

Sheila Dawkins-Flinn, OAPSE state secretary and chairwoman of the OMAD program, noted the dire situation in Akron, saying, “The poverty rate is double in Akron compared to the state average, and there are so many food-insecure children in the district.” She reiterated OAPSE's commitment to aiding these children as much as possible.
