Oakland Warehouse Workers Secure Teamsters Union Representation
(OAKLAND, Calif.) – In a pivotal move towards improved labor conditions, 37 warehouse workers at VISTAR, a Performance Food Group (PFG) subsidiary, have successfully voted to join the ranks of Teamsters Local 853. These workers aim for enhanced wages, benefits, and overall working conditions.
This recent unionization effort includes warehouse workers joining 30 VISTAR drivers, who earlier aligned with the Teamsters in 2025. Consequently, complete representation at the Oakland facility by Teamsters Local 853 has been achieved.
Steve Beck, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 853, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion. “We’re thrilled to welcome these hardworking brothers and sisters to Local 853,” he stated. “Their vote shows that workers are united and ready to build a stronger future. We look forward to helping them win a first contract that reflects their hard work, solidarity, and value to the company.”
The organization campaign faced substantial opposition, with VISTAR investing over $146,000 in efforts against unionization. However, this did not deter the workers. Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, remarked, “Despite the company’s anti-union campaign, these workers stood strong and won. This is another major step forward as we build power at PFG. When workers stand together, no amount of corporate intimidation can stop them from winning a voice on the job.”
Teamsters represent roughly 2,000 employees at PFG and its subsidiaries across the nation. Michael Townsend, a warehouse worker and new member of Local 853, noted the influence of the drivers' earlier decision: “There was a noticeable difference after the drivers organized. We saw them stand together and fight for a strong first contract. That inspired us to do the same. Now it’s our turn to have a voice on the job and the protections that come with a Teamster contract.”
Established in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters stands for 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more information, please visit Teamster.org. Stay updated by following them on X and Facebook.
