Nurses Union Endorses Dr. Aisha Wahab for Congressional Run

The largest nurses union in the United States, National Nurses United (NNU), has officially endorsed Dr. Aisha Wahab for a seat in California’s 14th Congressional District. Dr. Wahab, known for her tenure as a California State Senator, has been an advocate for public health and social work, particularly pushing for a single-payer health care system. NNU aims to collaborate with her to advance a progressive agenda that benefits patients, immigrant communities, and the working population.

NNU President Mary Turner, RN, praised Dr. Wahab's efforts during her legislative term, stating, “During her time in the California legislature, Dr. Aisha Wahab fought for affordable and safe housing, health care for all, and a progressive tax system that ensures billionaires pay their fair share.” Turner emphasized the need for leaders like Wahab in Congress who are prepared to challenge the current administration on issues such as immigrant safety and universal health coverage, including Medicare for All.

Dr. Wahab expressed her commitment to healthcare reforms, asserting, “Health care is a human right. Nurses were there for my family in our most critical moments, and I’ll stand with them in Congress to put people before profits.” She aims to build on her achievements in the Senate, which include capping insulin costs and defending Medi-Cal and universal healthcare initiatives.

Representing over 225,000 nurses nationwide, NNU backs candidates aligned with their core values, such as ensuring safe patient staffing in hospitals, upholding workers' rights to organize, and advocating for universal healthcare through Medicare for All. According to a recent Gallup poll, nurses were named the most trusted profession in the United States for the 24th consecutive year. NNU is eager to support Dr. Wahab's campaign and collaborate with her on critical issues impacting registered nurses, patients, and communities.
