Modesto Workers at Flowers Foods Secure Union Contract with Teamsters

Historic Unionization: Modesto Workers Lead the Way at National Bakery Company

In a groundbreaking move, employees at Flowers Foods in Modesto, Calif., have successfully ratified their first union contract. This marks the first time a group within the company has organized and secured union representation on a national scale. The 12 members of Teamsters Local 948 are now set to benefit from enhanced wages, Teamsters health care, and retirement benefits.

Tim Parolini, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 948, stated, “This is a vital win for workers at bakery giants like Flowers Foods. The leadership and dedication of the workers delivered results at the bargaining table that will build the foundation for good wages, safety on the job, health care, and retirement benefits for every unit that organizes in the bakery division across the Teamsters Union.”

Flowers Foods stands as the second largest producer and marketer of packaged bakery foods in the United States, with its brand portfolio including well-known names like Wonder, Nature’s Own, and Dave’s Killer Bread.

Chris Zent, a business agent with Local 948, commented on the development, saying, “This is a great first win at Flowers Foods. With the support of the Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference and our organizer Mike Pratt, we are looking forward to carrying the momentum of this contract ratification forward to organize other depots across Joint Council 7.”

Shop steward and Local 948 member Steve Fernandez emphasized the impact of the union’s solidarity, noting, “The strength of Teamsters solidarity on our side was critical. This is a pivotal moment for thousands of Flowers workers across the country. When workers are unified, we win.”

Teamsters Local 948 has an established presence across Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Merced, and Stanislaus Counties, representing thousands of workers in various sectors, including cannery and food processing.
