Michigan Special Agents Unite for Fair Pay and Recognition Through Union
The Unsung Heroes of Michigan's Law Enforcement
While the spotlight often shines on dramatic crime shows, the real-life efforts of Michigan's special agents often go unnoticed. These professionals tackle challenging cases such as public corruption and white-collar crime, playing a crucial but often overlooked role in law enforcement.
Agent Michael Swiercz highlights the behind-the-scenes nature of their work, stating, “A lot of the work we do is in the background. It’s so important that this work is being done, but the public isn’t realizing who’s actually doing it.”
In response to feeling left out of the conversation, a significant number of Michigan's special agents have recently joined the Michigan State Employees Association (MSEA), AFSCME Local 5. With 90% membership, these agents are uniting to amplify their voices and seek equitable treatment.
The agents are pressing for comparable pay raises and pensions like their counterparts in law enforcement. Swiercz emphasizes the necessity of the union, “Without the union, we would have no voice. We want to be brought back into the conversation and have the same opportunities and benefits as other law enforcement officers.”
Efforts are underway to elevate their cause. These agents are engaging with state legislators, and MSEA is preparing a media initiative to inform the public about their pivotal role in safeguarding Michigan’s citizens.
Despite fostering a robust working relationship with state Attorney General Dana Nessel, the agents believe more action is needed at the state level to secure the compensation and retirement benefits they merit.
Their movement is part of a broader trend where public safety professionals are leveraging union power to protect their rights. AFSCME members across corrections, law enforcement, and emergency services continue to be committed to protecting the community.
