Michael Tillman's Journey from Bus Enthusiast to L.A. Metro Supervisor

From Childhood Fascination to Community Service: A Transit Supervisor's Journey

Michael Tillman, who grew up relying solely on public buses for transportation with his family, has transformed his early fascination with buses into a dedicated career in public service. Today, he stands as a transit operation supervisor for L.A. Metro, the transportation authority of Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States.

Reflecting on his upbringing, Tillman recalls, “It was our only means of transportation to get around town. I became fascinated with buses.” This fascination has evolved into a commitment to his community through his work at L.A. Metro.

His role involves overseeing the operations of the county's bus services, ensuring adherence to schedules, responding to radio and phone calls from bus operators, and assisting with emergencies or breakdowns. “If anyone’s going to be there, to help the community, to help our bus operators, to help the public, I want that person to be me,” Tillman states.

Colleagues, such as Jonathan Marmolejo, recognize Tillman's dedication and passion. “As a supervisor and as a co-worker he’s an important asset to the team,” Marmolejo notes, highlighting how Tillman's absence would significantly increase the workload for others.

In recognition of his outstanding service, Tillman, a member of AFSCME Local 3634 (District Council 36), has been honored with the Never Quit Service Award. This accolade celebrates public service workers who exceed expectations to enhance their communities.

For Tillman, the work is deeply personal. He shares, “When a bus operator is running ahead of schedule, and that person misses that bus, now that citizen has to wait two hours for a bus. Like, that could be my mom, my grandmother, my sisters.” His decision-making is driven by his care for the community and its people.

His childhood curiosity about buses continues to fuel his enthusiasm today. “I just love what I do,” Tillman expresses. “I’m passionate about it. I love helping people, and that’s something that has brought purpose to my life.”
