Los Angeles Metro Transit Ambassadors Achieve Significant Contract Milestones
July 16, 2025 - In a significant victory for labor rights, Metro Transit Ambassadors in Los Angeles have successfully ratified their inaugural collective bargaining agreement under the representation of Teamsters Local 986. The contract promises robust medical benefits, a pension plan, workplace protections, seniority rights, and increased paid leave over a four-year period.
The arduous two-and-a-half-year negotiation process resulted in a deal that not only secures economic gains for the workforce but also solidifies their roles within the Los Angeles County Metro Transit Authority, according to Chris Griswold, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 986. "Congratulations to Metro Transit Ambassadors on their first-ever Teamsters contract," Griswold stated. "This contract will transition a pilot program into a permanent career opportunity providing job security to hundreds of workers."
Currently, the 400 Metro Transit Ambassadors are employed by private transportation contractors. However, they will transition to direct employment with the Los Angeles County Metro Transit Authority by the end of the month. This shift is expected to bring a more stable and secure career path for these workers.
Representatives from the Metro Transit Ambassadors, such as Kathleen Ceniceros, have expressed their satisfaction with joining the Teamsters. Ceniceros noted, “I voted to join the Teamsters because I have never been part of something that supports working people. To have a union looking out for me and my co-workers is not only something I wanted, but something I needed.”
Teamsters Local 986, established in 1948, continues to advocate for workers' rights across the Western United States, Hawaii, and Guam. More details about their initiatives can be found at local986.org.
