Message from Laura Dickerson, UAW Director, TOP Dept/ Region 1A

TL/DR -

The article is written by Laura Dickerson, the first African American woman elected to the International Executive Board of the UAW. She acknowledges the support of mentors and other strong women in her journey, highlighting the importance of continuing to lift others up as they climb. Dickerson encourages others to engage in local standing committees and women’s organizations to champion equality and workers' rights, emphasizing that their work towards a more just and equitable future is far from over.

Historic Achievement of an African American Woman in UAW

Having become the first African American woman elected to the UAW's International Executive Board, I am filled with immense gratitude and a deep sense of duty. My mentors like Liz Jackson, Dottie Jones, and Eunice Stokes have guided me to this milestone with their unwavering belief and commitment.

Women Making a Difference

Today, I am humbled to stand amongst amazing women effecting change in Michigan and nationwide. We carry the power to lead and transform sectors but must remember our success is built on the groundwork of our predecessors. It is our obligation to pay tribute to their legacy by lending a hand to others on our path.

Women Breaking Barriers

In the last few years, we've seen women ascending to leadership roles, particularly in Michigan where the Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State are all women. They epitomize the possibilities when barriers are shattered and progress is promoted.

Continuous Strive Towards Equality

Our mission is far from over. We must continue to share knowledge, inspire each other and empower our sisters. Women globally understand a biased field does not ensure equality or justice – it's up to us to amplify our voices and escalate our efforts for fairness in our institutions.

Women's Active Engagement

I urge you to be part of your local standing committees, engage in women’s organizations backed by this Union, and be politically active. Women's rightful place is in her union, fighting for the rights and welfare of all workers. Find and claim your seat at the table.

Driving Towards a Just Future

Together, let's persist to champion progress, advocate equality, and remain united as we stride towards a just and equitable future.

In solidarity,
Laura Dickerson
