(PEMBROKE, N.H.) – More than 255 workers at Associated Grocers Northeast, members of Teamsters Local 633, have initiated a strike in response to unsatisfactory contract terms. At the forefront of their demands are improved wages, enhanced benefits, and safer working conditions.
On September 26, an overwhelming 98% of the Pembroke distribution center's team voted to strike unless the company retracted its pension reduction proposals. The proposed cuts target the New England Teamsters Pension Fund, a vital resource for these workers.
"After months of negotiations, management still refuses to recognize the value of workers who keep their operation running," stated Jeff Padellaro, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 633. "Our members are sending a clear message: keep the pension or no contract."
As the largest retailer-owned wholesale grocery distributor in New England, AGNE's operations are critical, fueling numerous independent grocery stores across the region. The strike has already caused significant disruptions in deliveries across New England and New York.
"The company is trying to strip away retirement benefits that we’ve spent years earning," explained Shawn Gilan, a 14-year maintenance worker and Local 633 member. "We’re fighting to protect our pension so that we have security and dignity."
Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division, further emphasized the union's stance against corporate pressures. "New England Teamsters will not let corporate greed rob them of the retirement security they have rightfully earned. Our pensions are not bargaining chips," he declared. "We demand that AGNE end its attacks on our members’ pensions and return to the bargaining table with a serious proposal. The entire Teamsters Union stands behind Local 633 members. We will not back down until our members win a fair agreement that protects their retirement."
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, established in 1903, represents over 1.3 million members across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more details, visit Teamster.org or follow them on X @Teamsters and on Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
