Kaiser nurses to hold vigil protesting suspension of gender-affirming care

RNs to Hold Vigil Against Kaiser Permanente's Halt on Some Gender-Affirming Care

Registered nurses from various Kaiser Permanente locations are organizing a vigil scheduled for 4 p.m. tomorrow, July 25, in San Francisco, California. The event aims to honor transgender patients affected by Kaiser’s recent decision to suspend certain types of gender-affirming care. The nurses are part of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United (CNA/NNU).

The suspension affects individuals under the age of 19, a move that nurses argue will significantly impact their patients. Despite the development, the nursing staff remains dedicated to advocating for all patients requiring care.

Event Details:

  • Who: Kaiser Permanente registered nurses
  • What: Vigil supporting gender-affirming care
  • When: Friday, July 25, at 4 p.m.
  • Where: 2425 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, Calif. (in front of the hospital)

Sydney Simpson, a registered nurse specializing in interventional radiology at Kaiser San Francisco, stated, “Kaiser’s own foundation has put out research on the efficacy of this care. The evidence is there that this care is safe and effective. What’s unsafe and ineffective is caving to political pressure that puts our patients at risk. We won’t stand for it, and it’s why we’re taking action together.”

The California Nurses Association represents close to 25,000 registered nurses at Kaiser facilities and is affiliated with National Nurses United, the largest nurses union in the United States.

The California Nurses Association/National Nurses United is recognized as the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the nation, with a membership exceeding 100,000 across more than 200 facilities in California and over 225,000 registered nurses nationwide.
