Iowa RNs rally against VA staffing cuts and union rights violations

Protests Erupt Over VA Staffing Cuts in Iowa

Registered nurses affiliated with the National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU), who provide care to veterans within the VA Central Iowa Health Care System, are organizing a rally on March 21. The protest, taking place at Union Park in Des Moines, Iowa, aims to highlight the detrimental effects of staffing reductions on veteran healthcare services.

The VA Central Iowa system, which includes the Des Moines VA Medical Center, has been experiencing significant losses in nursing and auxiliary staff. These losses are attributed to ongoing workforce reductions under the Trump administration, leading to concerns about the maintenance of specialized care for veterans.

The situation in Iowa mirrors broader national issues. A recent New York Times investigation reported that the Department of Veterans Affairs has cut 4,900 nursing positions nationwide due to resignations and retirements. This staffing crisis is exacerbated by a hostile work climate and the VA's announcement in July 2025 to reduce its workforce by 30,000 employees.

An August 2025 report indicated that 79% of VA facilities are already facing severe nursing shortages. This issue is compounded by the rising number of veterans seeking care, as highlighted in a 2024 fiscal year report.

These staffing cuts occur alongside a broader attack on federal employees' union rights. NNU, together with other labor unions, has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration's attempt to dismantle collective bargaining rights for more than one million federal workers.

Union nurses fear these actions are part of a larger strategy to weaken or privatize the VA system. The VA’s "Red Team" Executive Roundtable report warned that privatization could erode the VA's direct-care system, potentially limiting veterans' healthcare choices.

NNOC/NNU advocates for over 450 registered nurses at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System and more than 16,000 nurses across 23 Veterans Health Administration facilities nationwide, including many who are veterans themselves.
