House Passes Legislation to Reinstate Union Rights for Federal Workers

WASHINGTON – In a significant development for federal employees, the U.S. House of Representatives has approved new legislation that seeks to restore union rights previously revoked by an executive order from former President Trump. The bill, known as the Protect America’s Workforce Act, aims to reinstate collective bargaining freedoms for over a million federal workers.

“We applaud the House of Representatives for passing the Protect America’s Workforce Act – a bill that strengthens federal workers’ freedoms on the job so they can continue to keep our nation safe, healthy and strong. This bill not only provides workers’ critical protections from an administration that has spent the past year relentlessly attacking them, but it also ensures that our communities are served by the most qualified public service workers – not just those with the best political connections. On behalf of the thousands of AFSCME members working across our federal government, we thank the lawmakers who stood with over one million federal workers today in voting to restore their collective bargaining freedoms.”

AFSCME President Lee Saunders expressed strong support for the passage of the bill, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding the rights of federal workers. He highlighted that the legislation not only protects workers from administrative overreach but also ensures that public service roles are filled by the most qualified individuals.

The Act is a response to efforts over the past year perceived as undermining the collective bargaining rights of federal employees. By overturning the executive order, the bill seeks to provide a stable environment where federal workers can efficiently serve the public without the fear of losing their union representation.
