In Shelbyville, Indiana, employees at Horseshoe Indianapolis have initiated a strike due to delays in recognizing their chosen union, Teamsters Local 135, as their official representative. The affected group, consisting of 200 dealers and dual rates, faced an uncertain delay in their union election initially planned for October 17, due to an ongoing government shutdown.

With the election postponed indefinitely, the workers suggested an alternative method involving a neutral third party to oversee the voting process. The management's refusal to this proposal prompted the workers to take action by striking.

Dustin Roach, President of Local 135, emphasized the determination of the workers, stating, “Horseshoe dealers and dual rates want and deserve the strong representation that Local 135 can provide them. We will not let the casino’s management stand in their way.” He further mentioned that the strike could end if management recognized the union.

The financial backdrop of this dispute highlights the stakes; Horseshoe Indianapolis posted $336 million in revenue last year, ranking it as the second highest-earning casino in Indiana. This establishment is owned by Caesar’s Entertainment, a multibillion-dollar organization.

Commenting on the situation, Tommy Blitsch, Director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, remarked, “Horseshoe is only delaying the inevitable by forcing these future Teamsters to the picket line.” He expressed confidence that the strike's outcome would favor the workers, resulting in their strong representation by the Teamsters.

Teamsters Local 135 boasts a diverse membership exceeding 12,000 individuals across multiple divisions. More information about their activities and representation can be found at local135.com.
