In Richmond, Virginia, over 200 Genesis Logistics drivers, who supply 7-Eleven stores throughout the Mid-Atlantic, are gearing up for a potential strike. This decisive action follows allegations of the company's refusal to engage in good faith negotiations, unilateral changes to employment terms, and unfair dismissal of union advocates.
"This strike vote is the result of the illegal, immoral, and outrageous behavior by management at this greedy company," emphasized Dwayne Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 322. He described the company's continued retaliation and intimidation against workers who exercised their right to unionize.
After a decisive vote in April where Genesis employees chose by over 90% to join the Teamsters, management has been accused of escalating efforts to undermine union activities. Workers are pushing for a fair contract that includes significant salary increases, affordable health benefits, and safe working conditions. Failure by the company to meet these demands could lead to a strike.
"Our decision to authorize a strike reflects the unjust and illegal treatment we’ve endured from day one," stated Matthew Relford, a Genesis driver and Local 322 member. He noted that, while reluctant to strike, the members are determined to defend their rights and secure a fair agreement.
The strike authorization provides Local 322 with the option to initiate a strike at any moment should negotiations fail. The Teamsters are insisting on the company’s return to the bargaining table with a genuine proposal and an end to employer-led labor violations.
"The members of Local 322 are fighting for what every worker in this country deserves: fair pay, quality benefits, and basic respect on the job," said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. He warned the company against continuing its current path of action, highlighting the Teamsters' readiness to hold the company accountable.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, established in 1903, represents around 1.3 million workers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more details, visit Teamster.org. Follow their updates on X @Teamsters and on Facebook at Facebook.com/teamsters.
