Thousands Rally in D.C. to Protect Democracy and Workers' Rights

In a demonstrative show of unity, thousands of individuals converged on Washington D.C. on March 28 for the national "No Kings" day of action. This event added to a wave of simultaneous protests nationwide, with participants voicing opposition to current administrative policies they argue undermine democracy and economic stability, all while privileging the wealthy.

During the D.C. event, influential figures from national labor unions, civil rights organizations, and local community groups spoke out against perceived efforts by the federal government to curtail essential public services and workers' rights. These measures, they claim, are being taken to benefit billionaires while simultaneously intensifying the federal presence in local communities.

No Kings Day of Action

AFSCME President Lee Saunders addressed the crowd, stating, "Right now, we are in the storm of our lives. Billionaires are calling the shots, and we’re paying the price. But we’ve seen this before. These same bullies have the same old playbook. Let me tell you, we’ve fought the good fight, and we have won before — for civil rights, for social justice, for workers’ rights. When we the people stand together and fight together we win."

Keya Chatterjee, Executive Director of Free DC, emphasized the growing strength of the movement, declaring, "Every time this regime attacks people, our movement grows stronger. Millions of people across the country rose in solidarity today and that’s what it’s going to take to end this regime and their attacks for good."

In her statement, Dr. Laura Meyers, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Metropolitan Washington noted, "As president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC, I was proud to represent not only Planned Parenthood today at the historic No Kings rally, but also the thousands of patients both here in DC and across the nation who depend on and deserve high-quality, compassionate health care."

Naveed Shah, Political Director of Common Defense, pointed out, "Since the last time we marched, this administration has dragged us deeper into war: sending brave American service members into harm’s way and leaving their families to carry the weight of that loss... But we know who we are. We fought for a democracy. And in this country we say it loud: no kings!"

Following these speeches, the assembly of protestors proceeded across the Frederick Douglass bridge and past Fort McNair. This route was symbolic as demonstrators expressed discontent with what they view as an administration attempting to suppress working voices. Participants used chalk art, chants, and signs to make their message clear.

The diversity of the crowd was notable, including nurses, teachers, bus drivers, and federal employees. They collectively voiced a strong opposition to a government they perceive as threatening health care access, weakening Social Security, and increasing economic hardships while immigration enforcement continues to impose terror in neighborhoods.
