Celebrating Worker Power: Building a Fairer Future on Labor Day

The Enduring Power of Labor: A Call to Action

Labor Day stands as a testament to the transformative power of workers united in their quest for better working conditions and equitable treatment. Historically, labor movements have been pivotal in securing safer workplaces, advocating for fairer economic practices, and strengthening democratic values.

Despite these achievements, today’s landscape is rife with challenges. Wealthy individuals are undermining workplace safety measures and imposing barriers to unionization, while public service workers face threats to their collective bargaining rights. Political figures are cutting essential public service funding and jeopardizing critical programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, even as the affluent enjoy substantial tax breaks.

Amidst these adversities, the potential for change remains substantial. The labor movement has consistently altered the course of American history, from ending child labor in coal mines to instituting the eight-hour workday, and championing the rights of sanitation workers in Memphis for fair wages and safe working conditions.

This Labor Day, we reflect on past victories and commit to shaping a future where effort earns due respect. A future ensuring working families can lead fulfilling lives, and where workers' perspectives resonate in negotiations, voting booths, and governmental policymaking.

AFSCME members are at the forefront of this vision through the Get Organized campaign. Public service workers nationwide, including nurses, librarians, bus drivers, sanitation workers, corrections officers, and childcare providers, are actively expanding their influence.

Efforts to recruit more members, organize workplaces, train activists, and hold anti-worker politicians accountable are intensifying. The resolve remains unwavering.

As we honor this Labor Day, the AFSCME community continues to drive this vital fight forward.
