Almost 7,000 UAW Members at Daimler Vote for Potential Strike

TL/DR -

Around 7,000 workers at Daimler Truck North America have voted to authorize a potential strike due to declining wages and job security. The contract, which covers workers in North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee, is set to expire on April 26. Despite the company amassing nearly $6 billion in 2023 and planning big stock buybacks and shareholder payouts, workers are fighting for better wages, benefits, and job security.

Daimler Truck North America Workers Authorize Strike Action

On March 8th, 7,000 workers from Daimler Truck North America overwhelmingly voted, with a 96% majority, to authorize strike action if needed. This covers parts and assembly workers in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The current contract terminates on April 26th.

Facing the harsh reality of dwindling real wages, job insecurity, and escalating cost of living, the workers who make Freightliner trucks, Western Star trucks, and Thomas Built Buses decided to challenge Daimler Truck's growing profits and shareholder distribution.

A video by the UAW revealed the deteriorating conditions at Daimler, which have provoked the workers to demand better wages, benefits, and job security.

Daimler Truck's profits were close to $6 billion in 2023. The company is set to invest billions in stock buybacks over the coming years while generously distributing millions to its shareholders. In a recent interview, Daimler Truck CEO Martin Daum, who received over $7.5 million in total compensation last year, arrogantly claimed "leftover money" belonged to the shareholders.

These Daimler workers join numerous other UAW members in their fight against corporate greed. Last year, thousands of UAW members earned unprecedented contracts, including Big Three automakers and workers from Allison Transmission in Indianapolis, IN.
