AFT President Responds to Mass Shootings in Providence and Sydney

WASHINGTON

Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), has issued a statement addressing recent mass shooting incidents at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia.

“Hanukkah should be filled with light and hope—but instead we are confronting devastation and heartbreak in two cities half a world away. Our prayers are with those recovering from injuries and those mourning the loss of loved ones in both Providence and Sydney. Let’s light a candle to chase away the hate and darkness that can seem like it’s all around us,” Weingarten expressed.

Weingarten highlighted the lasting impact of such tragic events, emphasizing that these incidents leave enduring scars, regardless of where they happen. Although the cause of the deaths at Brown University remains unclear, she pointed out that the Bondi Beach shootings were driven by antisemitism, a pervasive issue that requires collective action.

She also praised the bravery of an individual in Sydney who intervened during the attack, potentially saving numerous lives. Weingarten urged for renewed efforts to eliminate "weapons of war" from American streets and schools, especially as the nation marks the 13th anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy.
