AFSCME Texas Corrections Secures Major Legislative Wins in 2025
A Year of Legislative Successes for Texas Corrections Workers
In a significant year for corrections workers in Texas, the efforts of AFSCME Texas Corrections Employees Council 907 have resulted in substantial legislative victories. By collaborating with lawmakers across the political spectrum, the union has achieved key improvements benefiting correctional staff statewide.
Among the major accomplishments secured are:
- Significant pay raises for correctional and parole officers;
- $739 million allocated to offset health insurance premium hikes;
- A provision ensuring comp time converts to vacation time if unused within two years;
- A newly established leave pool enabling members to engage with legislators on workplace needs;
- The introduction of the Jovian Motley Act, mandating enhanced training in de-escalation, crisis intervention, and behavioral health, named in honor of a fallen colleague.
Although the Texas legislative session concluded on June 2, the momentum of Council 907 continues. The organization has welcomed over 1,300 new corrections professionals this year, including numerous newcomers to the field.
Looking ahead, members remain committed to opposing legislation that threatens their collective voice and ability to organize. Additionally, they aim to advocate for mental health leave provisions for officers facing job-related trauma.
As public safety professionals increasingly turn to union support, AFSCME members across corrections, law enforcement, and emergency services continue to prioritize community protection and individual freedoms.
