AFSCME Member Criticizes Arizona Rep for Supporting Harmful Budget Bill

In Tucson, Arizona, a community known for its economic challenges faces a new threat under recent legislation. Jerrad McMurrich, a dedicated emergency vehicle technician with the Tucson Fire Department, speaks out against the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," highlighting its potential impact on his neighbors in zip code 85705.

McMurrich, who also spent years teaching high school in the area, is deeply familiar with the struggles his community faces. He warns of significant setbacks, such as reduced access to Medicaid and cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which he believes will lead to increased hunger and job losses.

Disheartened by the support of his congressman, Juan Ciscomani, for the bill, McMurrich took action. "Our union went to his office to talk to him about the bill and encourage him to hear both sides of the fence," he expressed, emphasizing the potential harm to working families. Despite his efforts, the bill passed, favoring tax breaks for the wealthy while burdening the less fortunate.

McMurrich's disappointment is palpable as he reflects on the decision. "It breaks my heart to see them be so callous and greedy," he said. His concerns extend to the well-being of his former students, who might face hardships without Medicaid’s support.

Feeling let down, McMurrich hopes for more empathetic leadership. "I’m very disappointed in his decision. I wish he would have listened more to his constituents. I wish he would be more human," he lamented. McMurrich continues to rally for community support against policies he views as detrimental, urging others to get organized and stand up for working families.
