AFSCME Honors EMS Heroes, Fights for Public Services and Health

As National EMS Week unfolds, the critical role of emergency medical service professionals is highlighted, underscoring their tireless dedication to saving lives. These first responders are the initial lifeline in emergencies, and their contributions warrant the nation's appreciation.

AFSCME President Lee Saunders emphasized the value of EMS workers, including those within AFSCME's ranks, stating, “Every day, we are grateful for the selfless heroes who choose careers in EMS.” He added the reminder, “We must remember to never take their service or sacrifice for granted.”

This year's EMS Week coincides with a challenging period, as certain congressional figures and the new administration propose budget reductions that could adversely affect EMS and other essential public services.

Saunders highlighted the risks posed by these proposed cuts, specifically targeting Medicaid. He remarked, “Anti-union extremists in Congress are racing to gut Medicaid — which would devastate emergency services.” Such reductions could severely impact the ability of EMS workers to provide timely assistance during crises.

Further consequences of Medicaid cuts could extend beyond emergency services. Saunders warned that these measures could “shutter hospitals and clinics, force ambulances to travel farther, and delay care.” He also noted the potential strain on the EMS workforce, resulting in fewer staff, less equipment, and increased response times. “That’s why we’re getting organized to defend public services and our jobs,” he stated.

To combat these threats, AFSCME has initiated the Get Organized campaign, known as AFSCME GO. This initiative aims to rally AFSCME members in defense of public services and vital federal programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

Throughout this week, AFSCME reaffirms its commitment to advocating for EMS professionals, safeguarding public service positions, and ensuring the nation's public health is protected.

To support this cause, AFSCME invites participation in the campaign. Join the effort and Let’s GO.
