AFL-CIO Commemorates LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and Contributions to Labor Movement

Liz Shuler, AFL-CIO President, issued a statement acknowledging LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and the significant role of queer workers in the labor movement:

"This June, we honor the LGBTQIA+ community and commit ourselves to promoting equity and inclusion in all aspects of life, especially in the workplace. We strongly believe in the power of collective bargaining as a tool against any form of discrimination. That's why the AFL-CIO is striving to ensure all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, are protected by a union contract."

"We recognize the often overlooked contributions of queer organizers to labor rights movements. From Bayard Rustin’s pivotal role in the March on Washington to the persistent advocacy of Pride at Work, queer leaders have been instrumental in advancing workers' rights. However, the lack of comprehensive federal workplace protections continues to perpetuate discrimination against queer individuals. Additionally, state legislatures are persistently passing regressive, discriminatory laws that limit LGBTQIA+ rights, particularly trans rights, and impede the freedom to join a union. Regardless of this, we will not tolerate hate and will remain a catalyst for change - in the courts, in the streets, or at the ballot box. The AFL-CIO will always stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community."
