Teamsters Local 469 has achieved a significant milestone in New Jersey by finalizing their first-ever union contract within the cannabis industry, illustrating a strong move towards further organization in this rapidly growing sector. In a swift follow-up, another dispensary under the Cannabist brand in Mays Landing, N.J., has also voted to join the union, marking a month of significant progress.
Michael Broderick, the President of Local 469, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This is a core industry for our union and a major priority for us. We look forward to organizing even more cannabis facilities and negotiating even more contracts that deliver the respect and compensation that our members deserve.”
Garden Society workers, who joined the union fewer than six months ago, have ratified a contract that promises a more than 30% wage increase over three years. The agreement includes increases in paid time off, overtime, employer-funded retirement contributions, and safeguards against unjust disciplinary actions and subcontracting. Jesse Case, the Director of the Teamsters Food Processing Division, noted, “What you’re seeing in New Jersey is indicative of what you’re going to see all over the country. We’re winning the best contracts in cannabis because we’re the best union in cannabis.”
The rapid expansion of union influence is further evidenced by the decisive vote at the Cannabist in Mays Landing, where workers have shown overwhelming support for joining Local 469. Abby Hill, an employee at Cannabist, expressed optimism for the future, saying, “I’m looking forward to the support a Teamsters contract will provide. I’m excited for what the future holds for us.”
Currently, Teamsters Local 469 represents more than 4,000 workers across New Jersey, highlighting their substantial presence and growing influence in various industries within the state.
