Sysco Workers Secure Substantial Pay and Pension Benefits in Groundbreaking Deal
In a remarkable development for labor negotiations, over a thousand Sysco drivers and warehouse employees from Northern California and Nevada have successfully ratified a pioneering regional collective bargaining agreement. This milestone, achieved with the Teamsters' representation at Sysco, encompasses a significant 34% wage boost alongside considerable advancements in pension contributions and health care.
The four-year contract, hailed as a benchmark for future negotiations, also ensures stringent protections against hazardous working conditions and detrimental automation practices.
"This is a landmark agreement and a model for how the Teamsters will bargain with Sysco moving forward," stated Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. He credited Warehouse Division Representative Ray Torres and the bargaining team for their pivotal role in securing this contract.
The historic agreement now covers members of Teamsters Locals 137, 533, and 853, resulting from a credible strike threat that pressured Sysco to meet the union's demands for improved wages and benefits.
Joe Silva, a Sysco warehouse worker and Local 853 steward, expressed his satisfaction, saying, "Our new contract is the strongest we have ever negotiated." He emphasized the unity and determination of the workforce in achieving this significant deal.
As one of the leading food service providers in the U.S., Sysco posted $1.95 billion in net profits for 2024, marking a more than 10% increase from the previous year. Ryan Sullivan, a Sysco driver and Local 533 steward, remarked, "We wanted our fair share of this company’s success — and we got it."
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, founded in 1903, represents 1.3 million workers across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. For more details, visit Teamster.org. Follow the Teamsters on X and Facebook.
