Madison Metro Transit Workers Secure New Contract with Enhanced Safety and Benefits
In a significant development for public transportation workers in Madison, Wisconsin, 425 employees of Madison Metro Transit have successfully ratified a new collective bargaining agreement. The employees, represented by Teamsters Local 120, have been negotiating for nearly a year, striving to secure better terms in their contract.
Tom Erickson, President of Local 120, emphasized the importance of maintaining and improving conditions for these vital workers. He stated, “Teamsters at Madison Metro Transit are the backbone of this city’s transportation. Ensuring that these workers were able to maintain years of hard-fought protections and benefits, while also securing new and improved safety language was our top priority in this contract fight.”
Key elements of the newly approved three-year agreement include annual wage hikes, more vacation days, and enhanced safety provisions to protect workers from assaults. The Madison City Council gave its approval to the agreement, marking a significant victory for the transit workers.
Matt Sarenich, a transit operator and chief steward at Local 120, expressed his satisfaction with the contract, stating, “I’m proud of this contract negotiation and the negotiating team for battling to get the best contract I have seen in my almost 22 years as a Teamster. This was a huge win and it’s why my fellow Local 120 Teamsters brothers and sisters approved it by nearly 95 percent.”
