In a decisive move, more than 75 bus drivers and attendants from Teamsters Local 251 voted unanimously to ratify a three-year contract at Ocean State Transit, part of Student Transport of America (STA). The new agreement ensures significant wage hikes, access to Teamsters health care and pension plans, alongside enhancements in quality of life measures.
Commenting on the new contract, Matt Taibi, the Secretary-Treasurer of Local 251 and Director of the Teamsters Passenger Transportation Division, stated, “Teamsters in the passenger transportation industry continue to set and raise standards for bus workers in communities in Rhode Island and across the country.” He emphasized the unity and persistence demonstrated by the members throughout the process.
This contract success in Coventry is a continuation of a series of wins for Ocean State Transit Teamsters across Rhode Island. Notably, in December, around 200 drivers and attendants represented by Local 251 successfully ratified a similar contract.
Denise Nagy, a bus attendant and part of the contract negotiation team for Teamsters Local 251, expressed her satisfaction, saying, “We are thrilled to have won a contract that delivers the improvements we deserve.” She highlighted the recognition of their crucial role within the community and the collective strength they showcased.
Teamsters Local 251, which advocates for over 6,200 workers across Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, provides more information on its activities at teamsters251.org.
