U.S.-Morocco Relations Deepen with Economic Ventures in Western Sahara

Recent developments between the United States and Morocco signal a shift from mere diplomatic recognition to robust economic engagement in Western Sahara. Morocco's decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway after U.S. President Donald Trump is part of this evolving relationship, coupled with the first U.S.-backed investment in the region.

Western Sahara, abundant in minerals and located along Africa's Atlantic coast, has been a point of contention for decades. Morocco claims sovereignty over the vast territory, a stance supported by the U.S. The Algeria-backed Polisario Front, however, continues to campaign for independence and a UN-led self-determination referendum.

From Diplomacy to Economic Investments

On July 27, King Mohammed VI announced plans to rename the 1,055-kilometer Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway to honor Donald Trump, citing a "deep appreciation" for the U.S. president. This $1 billion infrastructure project is symbolic of the strengthened ties between the two nations.

Subsequently, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency committed $5.7 million for a feasibility study related to the ORNX green ammonia project in Western Sahara. This venture, involving U.S.-based Ortus Climate Mitigation LLC and the Spanish-German partnership Acciona-Nordex Green Hydrogen, marks the first federal funding from the U.S. for a commercial initiative in the area.

This investment elevates Western Sahara's position on the global stage. The region has gained additional exposure as a filming site for Christopher Nolan's movie The Odyssey, showcasing its cultural and economic significance.

Western Sahara's allure extends beyond its geopolitical importance, attracting interest for its potential in renewable energy and critical minerals. The territory is increasingly recognized for its economic opportunities, reflecting a growing perception of its strategic value.

On August 1, President Trump reiterated the U.S. stance on Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in a communication to King Mohammed VI during Morocco's Throne Day celebration. Trump stated, "The United States has been clear: we recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, and we support Morocco's serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution," emphasizing the U.S.' commitment to a strategic economic agenda.

He further directed efforts to foster economic and social development in Morocco, highlighting strategic sectors such as energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense. "American trusted technology and innovation across strategic sectors... will continue to serve as your partners for the next 250 years," Trump added.

These actions bolster Morocco's appeal to international investors while reinforcing its claim over Western Sahara. The partnership with the U.S. showcases a blend of diplomatic support, symbolic infrastructure gestures, and economic initiatives in one of Africa's most geopolitically significant areas.
