PennDOT Announces $20M Investment in Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) recently unveiled a $20 million investment as part of Round 1A of the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding. As one of the first states to launch an NEVI-funded charging station in December 2023, Pennsylvania is striving to create a cleaner, safer, and more affordable transport infrastructure.

Improving Alternative Fuel Corridors

This federal investment will support twenty-nine projects in 19 counties, aiming to improve the Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFC) and expand access to reliable electric vehicle (EV) charging within the state. The $20 million investment is part of the $171.5 million PennDOT is set to distribute for EV charging infrastructure through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) over the next five years.

Expectations for EV Charging Infrastructure

“Every federal dollar directed toward EV charging brings us closer to a future with accessible and reliable infrastructure that supports electric transportation,” notes PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. With Pennsylvania leading the charge in distributing NEVI funds, this move aims to promote significant environmental benefits and instill confidence among drivers.

Future Plans for NEVI Funding

Along with the Round 1 conditional awards announced in 2023, Pennsylvania has committed NEVI funding to 83 projects across 41 counties. PennDOT also recently announced priority areas for NEVI Round 1B, which seeks to fill gaps in the AFCs following Round 1 and Round 1A awards. Details of Round 1B priority areas can be found on the PennDOT website.

Requirements for NEVI Funds Support

The NEVI funds will support the operation and maintenance of charging sites, with the PA NEVI program operating as a reimbursement program. Recipients are required to provide a minimum 20% match. For this round of investments, PennDOT received 86 unique funding submissions requesting nearly $56 million.

Details on projects selected for conditional awards can be found on the PennDOT website.

BIL Funding Opportunities

Pennsylvania can compete for billions of dollars in federal funds through the BIL. To help communities understand these opportunities, PennDOT has created a web page with details on federal grant opportunities. Additionally, information about state infrastructure in Pennsylvania is available here, and you can find PennDOT’s planned and active construction projects here.
