Major Energy Infrastructure Upgrade Completed by Avangrid's RG&E in Sodus, New York

In a move to bolster energy reliability and capacity, Avangrid's subsidiary Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) has finalized its $23 million investment in a new substation located in Sodus, New York. This significant upgrade is a part of Avangrid's expansive $7 billion investment plan aimed at enhancing New York's energy infrastructure by 2030, ensuring a robust grid that can handle increasing energy demands and withstand severe weather conditions.

Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, emphasized the urgency of modernizing energy systems, stating, "With the need to upgrade and modernize our nation’s energy infrastructure, we are moving aggressively to invest in this critical energy need now." The project boosts the capacity of the local station nearly threefold, directly benefiting over 3,300 customers in the Sodus region.

Ricardo Cortes, RG&E's Substation Projects unit manager, highlighted the improvements, explaining that these advancements are set to "improve reliability and resiliency of the area transmission and distribution system, ensuring that the safe and reliable distribution of power is maintained for many years to come." This initiative aligns with RG&E's broader objective to meet New York State's shifting energy demands as it transitions to an all-electric model.

Local leaders have praised the project. New York State Senator Pam Helming remarked on its economic significance for Wayne County, while Assemblyman Brian Manktelow described it as "a great step forward in ensuring that it will be well-equipped to handle the growing demand from the 3,300 customers it serves."

The newly developed substation replaces an outdated facility that had been operational since 1966. The site at the intersection of Green Street and Belden Avenue now features a state-of-the-art gas-insulated switchgear control system, a modern transformer, and enhanced remote monitoring capabilities, enabling 24/7 operation and faster response times during outages.

Dan Ingersoll, Mayor of Sodus, expressed satisfaction with RG&E's efforts, noting, "RG&E has fulfilled the Village’s requests for a site plan that visually enhances the area." This investment includes upgrades to convert existing circuits from 4kV to 12kV, further reinforcing the grid's capacity to meet future demands.

The substation project, expected to reach completion by spring 2025, reflects RG&E's commitment to maintaining infrastructure resilience and optimizing energy distribution. For more information about RG&E and its parent company Avangrid, please visit www.rge.com and www.avangrid.com.
