Massive Investment to Boost High-Speed Internet in Oregon
The foundation has been laid for a significant investment in Oregon's high-speed internet expansion. This move aims to provide everyone in the state with access to high-speed internet.
Oregon's Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment proposal has been greenlit by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration. This approval sets the stage for utilizing nearly $700 million in federal funds.
The director of the Oregon Broadband office, Nick Batz, emphasizes the goal is to achieve comprehensive internet access. He calls it a monumental investment and notes the importance of high-speed internet in areas like remote work and telemedicine, more so in Oregon's rural regions.
Batz further explained that the state is now set to start the selection of grantees who will construct the infrastructure in unserved or underserved areas.
Our challenge is to identify all locations in Oregon eligible for BEAD funding. We aim to have a comprehensive list of these locations, which is likely to be in the 120-,130-,140,000 range," he elaborated.
Increased funding for broadband access has become possible thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed by Congress. The Biden Administration is now working on distributing over $42 billion to states to augment high-speed internet connectivity.
