Italy, Texas Celebrates Groundbreaking $4.8 Million Fiber Optic Investment by Legacy ISP

On March 7, the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development Administrator of the Rural Utilities Service, Andy Berke, and State Director Salerno visited Italy, Texas. They celebrated the commencement of a $4.8 million investment by Legacy ISP. This endeavor will bring high-speed internet service to rural Texans, connecting 24,306 individuals, 1,064 businesses, 73 educational facilities, and 40 farms in Ellis and Hill counties.

Legacy ISP, founded by Thurston Taylor and Cody Williams, was recognized for its dedication to providing affordable, high-speed internet in rural communities. The new project will create a 100% fiber-to-the-premises network, delivering broadband speeds of up to 1 Gbps.

State Director Salerno emphasized the importance of high-speed internet for Texas's nearly 5 million rural residents. "Legacy ISP will deploy the technology with the high-speed internet access communities need to thrive in an increasingly digital world."

This groundbreaking is part of 197 ReConnect project investments by the Biden-Harris administration, aiming to bring high-speed internet access to approximately 500,000 people in rural America. This is USDA’s largest effort to bridge internet gaps in unserved and underserved rural regions.

ReConnect Loan and Grant Program Round Three Investment

In the third round of the ReConnect Program, USDA invested $1.66 billion to advance high-speed internet access for rural customers across 31 states and territories. So far, USDA has announced $1.76 billion for projects in the fourth funding round.
