Hawaii American Water Secures Approval for Revised Wastewater Rates

The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission has recently granted approval for new wastewater rates applicable to Hawaii American Water's service regions, including Hawaii Kai, Mauna Lani, and Waimea. This decision underscores a significant infrastructure revamp across the islands.

The application for these rate adjustments was submitted on August 5, 2024, fueled by extensive investments exceeding $40 million aimed at upgrading infrastructure within these areas. These enhancements are poised to replace outdated systems and ensure compliance with environmental standards, while also improving facilities like treatment plants, collection systems, and pump stations.

Lee Mansfield, Senior Manager of Operations at Hawaii American Water, stated, “We are committed to making necessary infrastructure investments that allow us to continue providing safe and reliable wastewater services, while also enhancing the systems for long-term sustainability, resiliency and environmental protection.” Mansfield emphasized the company's strategy of balancing investment with cost management to maintain service reliability and affordability.

The updated rates are slated to take effect in early August 2025. Customers in Hawaii Kai can anticipate an approximate $4 monthly increase in their bills. For those served by the Mauna Lani and Waimea operations on the Big Island, monthly rate hikes are expected to range between $18 and $25. Notably, the last rate changes occurred in September 2003 for Mauna Lani and in January 2011 for Waimea, with Hawaii Kai experiencing its previous rate adjustment in 2021.

Hawaii American Water will communicate these changes to customers through billing statements, and additional information will be accessible via their website under the Customer Service Billing section.
