Port of Grays Harbor Terminal 4 Launch Marks a Pivotal Moment for U.S. Infrastructure
GRAYS HARBOR, WA – The Port of Grays Harbor Terminal 4's grand opening marks a crucial step forward in U.S. port infrastructure development. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), a key figure on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, attended the event alongside union leaders, business figures, and local officials to highlight the transformative impact of this project.
At the ceremony, Sen. Cantwell emphasized the importance of the development, saying, “ILWU 24 workers are making sure that a soybean farmer 1,000 miles away in South Dakota can compete with Asia, and that is what we're doing here today. This $25.5 million dollar investment that helps this project is going to attract over $100 million in private sector development, and that is why you put federal dollars on the table, and that's what you sent me to Washington to do.”
The Terminal 4 expansion is a notable achievement, largely funded by a $25.5 million federal grant from the Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), which Senator Cantwell has actively championed. This federal support complements a $100 million investment from private entities, significantly enhancing the port's capability by doubling its rail infrastructure to 90,000 feet. This improvement facilitates quicker loading times and bolsters the shipment of soymeal from the U.S. to Asia.
Sen. Cantwell remarked, “We are now working hard to pass another infrastructure investment bill, because we have to continue to make port infrastructure investment. And I'm going to use this project to tell all my colleagues on both sides of the aisle: ‘This is what America gets and American workers get when you make port infrastructure investment.’”
The Port of Grays Harbor stands as Washington State's leading commercial seafood port and the largest soymeal exporter on the West Coast. Its expanded capabilities now promise to further enhance U.S. export efficiency and competitiveness.
Sen. Cantwell's commitment to the PIDP program is evident in her efforts to expand its eligibility criteria to include seafood-related infrastructure projects in Washington, underscoring her dedication to supporting the state's $60 billion maritime economy.
