In a significant development for emergency medical services workers in New Jersey, 261 members of Teamsters Local 97 at University Hospital have successfully ratified their first standalone collective bargaining agreement. This essential contract aims to elevate wages, benefits, and other compensatory measures to align with the rising cost of living in the area.

Local 97 President Maria Perez expressed her gratitude and enthusiasm, stating, “This success represents the culmination of years of advocacy, persistence, and unity among generations of union stewards and members.” She acknowledged the critical contributions of committee members, Business Agent George Burr, and Vice-President Amy Lewis in securing the agreement, highlighting the contract as a milestone in the union's history.

Previously included under a general Teamsters contract at University Hospital, this unique agreement now covers a specific group of 261 professionals. This group includes emergency medical technicians, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, call takers, transfer service operators, logistics technicians, and emergency vehicle mechanics.

Steve Chait, a paramedic and steward at Local 97, emphasized the importance of the new contract: “This is not just a new contract, it’s a recognition that EMS work is different, and it deserves a focused voice at the bargaining table.” The establishment of a distinct contract empowers these workers to participate in targeted negotiations that directly address their particular needs.

Teamsters Local 97, which advocates for workers across various sectors in New Jersey, continues to support its members through dedicated representation and negotiation. For more details, interested parties can reach out via email at teamsterslocal.ninetyseven@verizon.net.
