AFSCME Urges Congress to Extend ACA Tax Credits as Shutdown Ends
Government Reopens After Record Shutdown; Health Insurance Costs Remain a Concern
The conclusion of the 43-day federal government shutdown has shed light on ongoing healthcare challenges, with AFSCME President Lee Saunders emphasizing the need for legislative action to prevent rising insurance costs. As the government resumes operations, Saunders praised Congress members who stood against significant insurance premium increases but cautioned that more work is needed to safeguard affordable healthcare.
The recent shutdown, the longest in history, ended without a resolution on the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits, vital for many families to maintain affordable health insurance. "Now that the government is reopening, we’re calling on members of Congress to keep their promise and hold a vote to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits," Saunders stated. "Working families cannot afford to wait any longer to lower health care costs."
Polling indicates that the public largely attributes the shutdown to President Donald Trump and his congressional supporters. The core issue was the discontinuation of ACA subsidies, which were eliminated under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" to fund tax breaks for wealthy individuals and corporations. These subsidies are set to expire in January, leading to higher premiums for ACA marketplace shoppers. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, this change could result in premiums more than doubling for those who depend on these credits.
With many Americans already living paycheck to paycheck, the impending increase in health insurance costs poses a significant threat to financial stability. Should Congress neglect to extend the tax credits, the financial strain on working families will likely intensify, exacerbated by the policies of the current administration and its congressional allies.
Despite these challenges, AFSCME members remain committed to advocating for the protection of working families and crucial public services. The organization encourages public participation in its efforts, urging individuals to Get Organized and support the cause.
