AFSCME Supports Pro-Worker Governors Sherrill and Spanberger's Vision
In a significant electoral turnout, AFSCME members have rallied to support New Jersey's Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill, who campaigned vigorously on the promise of reducing living costs for residents.
New Jersey's New Leadership
Mikie Sherrill's victory is hailed by AFSCME, with President Lee Saunders emphasizing her commitment to enhancing public services. “From increasing access to great schools and quality hospitals to improving transit options and infrastructure, Governor-elect Sherrill knows the key to affordability is strong public services. That is why she’ll make sure the AFSCME members who power New Jersey have the support they need,” said Saunders.
Progressive Change in Virginia
AFSCME's optimism extends to Virginia, where Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger is expected to bolster public services. Saunders noted, “Governor-elect Spanberger understands that our communities depend on the public service workers who keep them running.” With a supportive governor and legislative majority, there is anticipation for enhanced resources for public workers and broader union participation.
New York City’s New Mayor
In New York City, AFSCME District Council 37 expressed congratulations to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. The union's Executive Director, Henry Garrido, remarked in a statement that the election results reflect a demand for systemic change, stating, “We’re proud to be one of the first unions to endorse Zohran for mayor, and we look forward to working with his administration to ensure New York City becomes an affordable place for all who live here — especially those who make this city run.”
This trio of electoral victories underscores a growing movement toward leaders who prioritize the needs of public service workers and aim to create more equitable and affordable communities.
