Local Union Leaders Convene in Onaway for Development Institute
ONAWAY, MI – From October 5 through 10, over 170 union delegates assembled in Onaway to participate in the Local Union Officers Institute. This event focused on enhancing leadership skills, fostering education, and building solidarity among the attendees.
The institute offered a range of workshops aimed at bolstering the capabilities and confidence of local union leaders. Key sessions included essential classes on the Administrative Responsibilities of Local Union Officers. Participants also had the opportunity to choose from electives that covered topics such as Appeals and Union Elections, conducting Effective Union Meetings, and strategies for Building a Powerful Contract Campaign.
Delegates engaged in Leadership Roundtables, guided by the UAW Legal Department, where open discussions and collaborative problem-solving took place, addressing everyday challenges faced by local officers.
A notable event of the week was a plenary session featuring UAW President Shawn Fain. During this session, President Fain engaged in a direct question-and-answer dialogue with the delegates.
The Local Union Officers Institute serves as more than just a training ground; it is an environment dedicated to enhancing union leadership. Attendees leave with valuable tools, resources, and networks to better assist their members and communities.
