AFSCME, Maryland Leaders Unite for Workers' Rights and Public Services

In the wake of the enactment of the “Big Beautiful Bill,” AFSCME members, alongside leaders in Maryland, are rallying to safeguard public services and hold anti-worker politicians accountable. The union's focus is on maintaining the integrity of Maryland's hospitals, schools, and infrastructure.

AFSCME members have joined forces with Governor Wes Moore in a concerted effort to shield public services from severe funding cuts. The partnership aims to retain the essential staff and resources that enable these services to operate effectively. Governor Moore praised the unwavering commitment of unions, stating, “Unions never stop fighting for what they believe in — you are the boots on the ground.”

Recent union achievements in Maryland include securing backpay for state workers, raising the minimum wage, and enhancing salaries for state employees. Additionally, collective bargaining rights have been extended to state supervisors and library workers. Moore emphasized Maryland's commitment to its values, saying, “In Maryland, we are going to continue to lead with our values. We are going to continue to stand with our unions. And we are going to continue to protect our people — our unions will help to lead the way.”

Patrick Moran, President of AFSCME Council 3 and an AFSCME vice president, highlighted the critical role of pro-worker state leadership in defending communities against unfavorable federal decisions. “We’re proud to have Governor Wes Moore and Comptroller Brooke Lierman as partners in Annapolis to ensure that Maryland’s public services are protected and the people who provide them are respected,” said Moran. He expressed optimism about expanding collective bargaining rights, improving contract negotiations, and enhancing wages and staffing levels across the state.
