National Nurses United Endorses Robert Peters for Illinois Congress Seat

National Nurses United (NNU), the leading union for registered nurses in the United States, representing over 225,000 members, has officially endorsed Robert Peters for the congressional seat in Illinois’ 2nd District.

NNU President Mary Turner, RN, emphasized Peters’ track record as a state senator, noting his consistent support for nurses advocating for improved working conditions and accountability from hospital management. Turner stated, “We know he will continue to champion nurses’ values of caring, compassion, and community in Congress. We look forward to working with Robert to win universal health care and to secure policies that will provide a better economic system for Illinois families.”

Turner also criticized the current administration, stating, “Our health care is in crisis. And rather than supporting policies that would strengthen public health, expand the VA, or provide universal health care, the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress want to hand over total control of our health care to private insurance and health care corporations who will worsen health outcomes in order to make a profit.”

Highlighting Peters’ alignment with the union’s values, Turner remarked that he stands with nurses and patients, ready to advocate for a government responsive to the working populace's needs.

Expressing gratitude for the endorsement, Peters commented, “I’m grateful to have the support of National Nurses United, a steadfast partner in our fight for guaranteed health care and safe working conditions.” He credited the organizing efforts of nurses as a source of inspiration and committed to prioritizing patient and worker interests over profits.

NNU is known for backing candidates who share their vision for transformative social change, including safe staffing levels in hospitals, workers' rights to organize, and universal health care coverage. The union is eager to support Peters’ campaign and collaborate with him in Congress on pivotal issues impacting nurses, patients, and communities.

National Nurses United stands as the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States, boasting over 225,000 members nationwide. Affiliates include the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
