(WASHINGTON) – In a significant development, members of Teamsters Local 25 have successfully negotiated a groundbreaking contract with Republic Services, following a strike that lasted for nearly three months. The agreement was ratified decisively with a 92 percent approval rate among the workers.
Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien remarked, “Republic Services torched tens of millions of dollars to force this unnecessary strike and drag it out in a failed attempt to break our members’ solidarity. Republic forced hundreds of thousands of regular, hardworking people living in Boston to suffer all summer long. But Boston Teamsters don’t break — ever — and we’ve ratified an incredible new agreement.”
The strike, initiated on July 1, saw over 400 workers from Local 25 standing firm against the waste management giant. The newly concluded five-year contract promises an impressive 46 percent wage increase, alongside notable enhancements in health benefits.
Tom Mari, President of Local 25, expressed his pride in the members' resolve, stating, “I’ve never been prouder of a group of Teamsters in my life. Our members stood strong for 81 days to send a message to Republic and to greedy employers across the country. Never once did the Teamsters waiver in our shared mission to protect one another on the job, increase wages, and improve benefits.” He added that the team is eager to resume service to their communities.
Meanwhile, the strike has not yet concluded for several Republic Services workers in Cumming, Georgia. Represented by Teamsters Local 728, these workers have extended their picket lines to Columbus, Ohio, influencing work operations for over 80 employees. The strikes in Georgia and Ohio are set to continue until a satisfactory agreement is reached.
