Advocacy for Enhanced Ferry Services Grows Stronger
A newly formed organization is making waves in North Carolina as it calls for increased investment in critical transportation infrastructure. Known as the Ocracoke Access Alliance (OAA), this group is on a mission to enhance ferry services, the NC-12 highway, and other essential projects for improved access to the state's coastal treasures.
Announcing the coalition's launch, the Executive Director of OAA, Justin LeBlanc, emphasized the importance of the ferry system in North Carolina: “The North Carolina Ferry System is the second-largest public ferry system in the United States. It should be a shining example of what makes our state and coastline remarkable, unfortunately, investment has not kept up with demand. We think we need to do better.”
The organization is gearing up for a comprehensive advocacy campaign aimed at both state and federal levels, focusing on necessary improvements and funding. By rallying businesses, citizens, and stakeholders, the OAA is gaining traction in its mission to ensure reliable and efficient transportation to Ocracoke Island.
LeBlanc highlighted the community's reliance on these services: “Our community and visitors depend on safe, reliable, and efficient access to this extraordinary island. Without sustained ferry operations & maintenance funding, a long-term plan for vessel replacement, and a resilient NC-12; access to Ocracoke will only become more constrained.”
The ferry system is not only a vital transportation link but also a key economic driver, as evidenced by a 2018 NC Ferry Division study. The findings include:
- Creation of 5,860 jobs (direct, indirect, and induced)
- Generation of $217 million in yearly employee earnings
- A contribution of $735 million to the state's economy
- Provision of $33 million in local and state tax revenue
- $40 million in direct benefits to passengers, encompassing:
- $18 million in vehicle cost savings
- $14 million in travel time savings
- $18 million in safety benefits.
The OAA plans to collaborate with regional authorities, including Hyde and Dare counties, to unify efforts and strengthen their voice in advocating for sustained and improved coastal access.
