(JESSUP, Md.) – A collective of bus and van drivers, trainers, and attendants affiliated with Teamsters Local 570 gathered in a show of solidarity today, pressing for a robust initial contract with Zum Transportation. These essential workers are responsible for transporting children safely to and from Howard County Public Schools.

"Our members at Zum are essential workers — they transport this community’s children day in and day out, ensuring their safety and well-being," stated Sean Cedenio, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 570. "It’s time for Zum to show their appreciation for these workers by offering a fair and timely first contract. Howard County leadership needs to do their part and ensure that this contract gets done and workers are paid their fair share."

Earlier this year, these workers voted emphatically, with a four-to-one margin, to align with the Teamsters. Their goal is to achieve a contract that accurately represents their contributions to the community while demanding the respect and compensation they have long deserved.

“We deserve a living wage. We work full-time hours and only get part-time pay,” remarked Tanyia Watts, a member of the bargaining committee. “We love our jobs and the kids we drive, but the wages are insufficient and it’s time for Zum to pay us what we deserve.”

While negotiations continue, wages remain a critical issue yet to be resolved. However, the employer has consented to back pay, which will be retroactive to the start of the 2025-2026 school year upon contract ratification. Local 570 and Zum have met recently, with more bargaining sessions proposed for September.

Teamsters Local 570, representing a diverse workforce in Baltimore and nearby regions, continues to advocate for fair employment conditions. For further details, visit team570.org.
