Gallup Poll: 70% of Americans Continue to Strongly Support Labor Unions

Support for Labor Unions in the U.S. Stays Strong, Gallup Poll Finds

As Labor Day approaches, a fresh Gallup poll reveals that nearly 70% of Americans continue to support labor unions. This steadfast approval highlights the crucial role unions play in advocating for fair wages, safer workplaces, and respect for workers' rights.

“Gallup polling once again shows historically strong support [for unions] because workers understand they have the power to win fair pay, safer working conditions and dignity on the job when they organize a union,” commented AFSCME President Lee Saunders.

In an era where economic pressures are mounting, the influence of labor unions is more important than ever. With billionaires and some congressional allies pushing to reduce wages, cut health care, and suppress workers' voices, unions stand as a barrier against these trends. Health care cuts and reduced Medicaid funding are among the issues unions are fighting against.

Despite being the driving force of the economy, workers are facing challenges from CEOs and politicians who prioritize tax breaks for the wealthy over essential services like food assistance and worker protections, according to Saunders.

Gallup's findings indicate that support for labor unions has been consistently high over the past five years, levels not seen since the mid-20th century.

Members of AFSCME are well aware of the transformative impact that union membership can have. They understand that collective action empowers workers to resist efforts to diminish their influence and rights.
