Home Care Provider Challenges Medicaid Cuts by Rep. Valadao

Home Care Provider Challenges Lawmaker Over Budget Cuts

In California's 22nd Congressional District, Monica Escalante, a dedicated home care provider, has voiced her concerns over recent legislative actions. Her focus is directed at Rep. David Valadao, who supported a budget bill that proposes significant reductions to Medicaid and other essential services.

Representing the United Domestic Workers, Escalante is particularly worried about the impact these cuts will have on her clients. For many, Medicaid is a critical support system that funds necessary care services.

Escalante's journey as a caregiver began early in her life. She initially cared for her grandmother, and later, her husband, who suffered a debilitating accident. Currently, she looks after a 35-year-old client with an autoimmune disorder, emphasizing the fundamental role of Medicaid in her work.

"I don’t remember not being a care provider. I help my clients with the day-to-day activities of living. I provide a clean, healthy environment," Escalante states.

The proposed budget cuts do not just threaten the well-being of those under Escalante's care but also jeopardize the livelihood of home care providers across the district. The legislation also targets nutrition assistance, Medicare, and vital public services.

Escalante questions the rationale behind prioritizing tax breaks for billionaires over maintaining these essential programs. She challenges Valadao, asking, "How do you plan on helping your constituents after these cuts are made? You need to show up and answer the questions that your constituents have. You have failed to do that time and time and time again. Your position as a representative in our district is severely at risk."

Despite her frustration, Escalante remains hopeful for change. She believes in holding lawmakers accountable and encourages others to sign up to Get Organized to make their voices heard.
