Champaign County employees in Illinois have achieved a significant milestone after almost a year of negotiations. Faced with the possibility of a strike, members of AFSCME Local 900 (Council 31) united to secure a robust union contract.

The agreement, finalized on July 8, came just before a scheduled strike, and was ratified by a large majority of workers in subsequent days. Conducted via workplace meetings, the ratification process allowed members to discuss and ask questions about the contract details, culminating in a 94% approval rate. Earlier, in late May, workers had nearly unanimously agreed to authorize a strike if needed (source).

This newly ratified contract introduces several key improvements for workers. Wage increases are a highlight, with the minimum hourly rate for full-time staff rising from below $16 to $18. Additionally, the contract maintains affordable healthcare by reducing premiums and safeguarding out-of-pocket expenses. It also includes provisions for free rabies vaccinations for Animal Control employees, among other benefits.

The collective strength of approximately 150 AFSCME members across various critical county departments made these achievements possible. Employees from the highway department, courts, coroner's office, and animal control exemplified the power of unity in public service.

This outcome underscores the impact of collective bargaining. When workers unite, they can effectively safeguard their interests, enhance job conditions, and contribute to their communities.

"One thing is clear: When AFSCME members speak up for one another and take action together, they win. That is the power of a union. And that is how we build a better future for all."
