Local 3613 Secures Pay Raises, Protections in New JTA Contract
In a significant victory for its employees, the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) recently finalized a new contract, ensuring substantial wage increases and enhanced job security for its workers. This development represents a major milestone for Local 3613 of AFSCME Florida.
Tracie L. Williams, a seasoned JTA dispatch supervisor nearing retirement, will benefit significantly from this contract. Williams, alongside her colleagues, recently celebrated the ratification of the agreement, which promises unprecedented pay raises and crucial job security measures.
The four-year contract introduces robust layoff protections and a notable 6.5% salary increase in its first year. New employees will see their starting wages jump from $17 to $30 per hour, and the top hourly rate is set at $34.10.
Michael Scott, another dispatch supervisor and vice president of Local 3613, emphasizes the importance of these gains. “We came from $17 an hour only three years ago. You walk in the door now and start at $30 an hour," he explains, highlighting the rapid wage progression.
In addition to these increases, workers can expect annual raises between 3.5% and 6%, along with performance and safety incentives up to 1%. The contract also provides clearer guidelines for grievance procedures and ensures advance notice of disciplinary meetings to allow for union representation.
Scott credits the success of the negotiations to the solidarity and strategic planning of Local 3613 members. The team was well-prepared with contract proposals before talks began, allowing negotiations to conclude in less than three days. This preparation thwarted attempts by JTA’s new CEO to reclassify jobs outside the bargaining unit.
