AFSCME President Praises Tim Walz as Kamala Harris's Running Mate
WASHINGTON – AFSCME President Lee Saunders released a statement following Vice President Kamala Harris's announcement of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate:
"Tim Walz embodies public service: always helping others and never leaving anyone behind. His values were forged in the National Guard and honed as a teacher and football coach in Mankato, Minnesota. Walz has consistently supported his community, now governing by empowering worker voices and defending career public servants.
"As governor, he challenged billion-dollar corporations to ban private prisons in Minnesota, protecting jobs for AFSCME corrections officers. He also passed legislation for free breakfast and lunch for students, ensuring AFSCME school employees have the resources to keep kids energized and ready to learn. Walz's leadership resulted in a historic state worker contract with across-the-board raises.
"Governor Walz demonstrates what leading with empathy can achieve. As a labor champion, he will bring pro-worker values to the White House. Together with Kamala Harris, they will protect our freedoms — to care for families, to have a job voice, and to thrive. We are ready to mobilize our union's full strength for this dynamic ticket on Nov. 5."
