RNs at Edward Hospital Join Union to Enhance Patient Care and Advocacy
Registered Nurses at Edward Hospital Vote to Unionize
Registered nurses at Endeavor Health Edward Hospital, located in Naperville, Illinois, have decided to join the National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC), a part of National Nurses United (NNU), the largest union for registered nurses in the United States. The votes were tallied today, following the conclusion of the polls yesterday.
"We are so proud to win our union election and join National Nurses Organizing Committee," expressed Kendra Creech, RN from the perioperative unit. "We know that a union for RNs will help us be even stronger advocates for our patients."
With 65% of nurses voting in favor, the decision to join the union empowers them to influence decisions impacting patient care. The inclusion of Edward Hospital nurses expands NNOC's representation to over 10,000 nurses in the Chicagoland area, alongside RNs from Rush University Medical Center, who joined the NNOC in May.
"We look forward to bargaining our first union contract that protects our patients and nurses so we can give them the care they deserve," stated Aneysha Becka, RN from the neonatal intensive care unit. "We want safe staffing at all times. This is why we voted to join NNOC/NNU — because our union knows how to win strong contracts."
The successful election also underscores nurses' concerns regarding the proposed merger between Endeavor Health and Rush. There are apprehensions that such a merger might result in increased prices, reduced services, and other profit-driven changes. Regardless of the merger's outcome, nurses at Rush and Edward Hospital will be in a strong position to advocate for their patients by joining NNOC.
Currently, NNOC represents more than 1,200 nurses at Edward Hospital.
National Nurses United is the largest and fastest-growing union and professional association of registered nurses in the United States with more than 225,000 members nationwide. NNU affiliates include California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, DC Nurses Association, Michigan Nurses Association, Minnesota Nurses Association, and New York State Nurses Association.
