National Nurses United Condemns Federal Actions Against Rep. Omar

Union of Registered Nurses Responds to Federal Actions Against Rep. Ilhan Omar

The nation’s largest union of registered nurses has issued a statement in reaction to recent federal activities involving Rep. Ilhan Omar. The statement addresses the federal government's raid on Omar's home, the confiscation of her possessions, and attempts reportedly made to strip her of her citizenship.

The union characterizes these actions as an abuse of power, pointing to the lengths the Trump administration has gone to target Rep. Omar, who is noted for her outspoken opposition to the president. The union stresses that this conduct should alert all citizens who cherish democratic values.

As midterm elections approach, nurses are raising awareness within communities, stating that democracy is in crisis. They highlight a series of actions taken by the Trump administration over the past two years, including the cancellation of union contracts for VA nurses and numerous federal workers. The statement mentions significant cuts to health care funding, amounting to nearly $1 trillion, which could result in millions losing insurance, hospitals facing financial strain, and resources being diverted to benefit wealthy donors and military endeavors.

The statement also condemns the deployment of armed federal agents in public spaces, which has led to fear among immigrant communities, the separation of families, and the detention of individuals in facilities described as concentration camps. These actions, the union asserts, generate profit for private prison companies at the expense of human dignity.

Rep. Omar, a vocal critic of Trump’s policies, is also reportedly targeted due to her identity as a brown immigrant woman. The union emphasizes the importance of respecting the human dignity of all individuals, condemning what it perceives as the administration's promotion of a societal hierarchy based on race, which dehumanizes and marginalizes Black and brown immigrants. This approach, according to the statement, mirrors tactics used in fascist regimes to divide and control the populace.

In the union's view, the actions taken against Rep. Omar exemplify numerous power grabs that not only cause immediate hardship for citizens but also jeopardize their ability to influence their futures. As the administration targets political adversaries, many Americans face challenges in meeting basic needs, such as food and healthcare.

National Nurses United has pledged to support Rep. Omar and oppose these attacks. The union remains vigilant as midterm elections near, committed to safeguarding free and fair elections. Should there be any interference, union nurses are prepared to collaborate with allied organizations to uphold democracy through peaceful civil disobedience, protest, and strikes.
